How Can I Avoid Relapse?

Whether you are newly sober, or you have been sober for a while, protecting your sobriety at all costs is a must especially when you know that you might be going through a tough season of sobriety.

Reach out

Getting involved in a 12-Step program will give you some much needed support during a trying time. Encouragement and inspiration to stay on the path of recovery can be offered to you by going to meetings and reaching out to your sponsor. Although you may feel like disengaging with others during this time, taking contrary action will produce better results.

Get out

You may feel like you need to hide from the dangers of relapse. The good news is that you can get out and face your demons in a sober atmosphere. If you are feeling weak and drinking or using is all you can think of, you probably should stay away from slippery slopes such as a bar or a party that is full of people that are ready to drink. There are sober activities that can be enjoyed with people like you that want to stay sober too.

Peace out

Give serenity a try. Meditating in any capacity can help you to get centered to remember why you got sober in the first place. Use mindfulness, yoga, or uplifting music to help you reach a peaceful place in your day. Invite others to join you so that you can pass on some peace and goodwill to all.

Shout out

One of the best ways to help you to stay sober is to get your mind off your addiction and put your hand out to someone else in need. Especially if you are a member of a 12-Step program, there is always somebody that would benefit from the support that you have to offer. Call other addicts to ask how they are doing. Go to a meeting to help set up or greet people at the door with a smile.
